Sure it has democratic processes but it's more complicated then just vote +50%. Just like Australia is a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy with weisminister style government you have to be more specific when talking about a certain country.

It was set up as a Constitutional Republic. Democracy at the Federal level was virtually non existent. "The People" had no vote on the senate, President, or Vice President. Only the House of Representatives involved a popular vote at the federal level. Senators were selected by State houses, and the House and Senate elected President and Vice President.

Our current system is a perversion of the system established by our founders, and allowed a much higher impact regarding mob rule, the ultimate tyranny, than was ever intended.

Since then the notion of democracy has expanded and morphed considerably there are now many types and variations to the point you almost can't call it a democracy any more. It's ever changing and evolving. Stating a country is a democracy is vague and generic not to mention lazy way to describe it. Just like saying all Asians look alike or maybe in your case all black people are the same
