I broke my neck in the army and they paid for all of my tuition, books, and gave me a small living stipend, through Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation. They paid for my education which is responsible for all of my upward mobility. I was born to very poor parents, was first person in my family to go to college, and now my son is enrolled in an engineering program in college without having to be wounded or disabled (or killed).
The US Army was good to me, sometimes. Sometimes it wasn't lol. I got an article 15 for smoking weed on leave and they made my life hell for a minute.
i am happy to hear you where able to make it work for the better
