i have to admit, i'm not particularly informed as to what's going on there, but i have a few questions since i repeatedly saw people equating this to the situation in ukraine:
- do the people of solomon islands want a military alliance with china? (i'm asking because the people of a country wanting to join NATO is a key requirement for membership)
- if so, who are they seeking protection from? which country is likely invade them if they don't ally with china?
- are we talking about an actual alliance that predominantly concerns military cooperation and mutual protection, or a blatant power grab based on economic / territorial incentives?
My own understanding is that, assuming that Solomon Islands is a sovereign nation, then who they invite into their country to set up a military base is nobody's business. If the US feels threatened, then it's simply too bad. Put more soldiers where your country is the closest to the islands if you must. But sovereign nations should have the right to self-determination.
