This is why expertise is a thing. You can generally trust people who are experts in a field to give you the most reasonable interpretation.
It's not fool-proof, the more politically involved things are the more corruption there is, but generally they're going to give you the best conclusions based on the information available.
So, for instance, nobody at any level wanted Covid to exist. Covid was a giant wrench in the world's economy and totally screwed up a lot of things. So when they come out and say Covid is real and a problem, you can trust they are being truthful because it's not good for anybody that Covid exists.
