This is why we have food stamps and soup kitchens. Until the supply of housing exceeds the demand for housing, the government says that destitute people may claim public spaces. Honestly, it really isn't that bad of a thing since public spaces are so huge.

He Might get acquitted or be able to claim some form of self defense in 1 MAYBE 2 of these but no way he gets out of there without at least 1 murder charge.

Almost anything that's somewhat hard or sharp can be used as a weapon, if such is the intention. Heck, even pillows can be used to kill people.

Bare hands can be deadly.

I don't condone violence, but once the squatters made a public claim to the area (which they ostensibly did), then your friend was trespassing by law. He should have gone straight to the mayor's office to have them evicted because they probably could have gone elsewhere. A lot of gang members exploit this provision in order to claim territory. That's why they are always on staircases/street corners instead of inside buildings.

I mean, I agree that the destitute can say, sleep on the streets. Maybe this is what you meant by "claim public spaces". However, what they can't do is to tell other people to leave, or to get out, because the spaces they are on belong to the public. It's not their private, personal property.

It becomes private once they claim squatter rights. The mayor can override this claim though and move them to a more suitable location.

Imagine me going to the central park in New York and just "squat". Now the park belongs to me.

You're from Canada its the same laws.

Thats why if people walk through your yard for 20 years and you never say anything there's now an easement for a path through your yard as a public walking trail.

This is why you see no trespassing signs and gates, you just have to prove you made an effort to communicate its private property but if you don't you're not legally allowed people to get off your lawn if its now a public walking path.

Same with skidoo trails, atv trails etc. That is why you see those no trespassing signs all through the woods in random places so the person can give evidence they made an honest effort and thus an easement is not formed.

Its the exact same with squatting and property here in Canada.

Ultimately a lot of people don't know and they end up fucked with footpaths through their yards in cities and in rural areas they end up with club paths all over their lands. I don't understand why its not taught in school.
