I don't doubt that. But do WE like paying for a 22/hr wage over a 5/hr? I think it's clear that we need to transition better because too many people are abruptly left behind. Maybe have 5 year diminishing tariffs or something.

Being comfortable working with somebody is a qualification

Duh, I obviously meant "job-related qualification". For instance, Yanet Yellen is qualified to be treasury secretary because she knows a ton about finance and has worked with all the key people in the field before.

NEW: President-elect Biden announces key picks for his foreign policy team:

• Sec of State: Antony Blinken
• Homeland Security Sec: Alejandro Mayorkas
DNI: Avril Haines
• US Amb to UN: Linda Thomas-Greenfield
• NSA: Jake Sullivan
• Climate Envoy: John Kerry

It's being reported Janet Yellen, former Fed chairman, is going to be selected for Treasury Secretary.

This will be a first, having a woman heading intelligence.

So, you finally admit that what Ice claimed earlier in the thread was BS?

He clearly isnt trying to find "the best people", he's trying to find people who are "sufficiently competent/qualified" and with whom he's comfortable.

Look, I dont blame Bidenfor that, it's what almost all presidents do. (Except for the Kerry thing, which is ridiculous.)
I just reject this notion that Biden is doing something noble or unusual with his picks. Must be some sort of residual TDS - putting Biden on a pedestal just because he's drawing a contrast with Trump.

I stand by my statement. In the context of cabinet and high profile staff picks, Biden is showing a preference for competent people with the relevant experience. It goes without saying that Democrats choose Democrats and Republicans choose Republicans. So, I don't know how "the best people" is inaccurate. From the relevant candidates a president typically would choose from, Biden's going with the best people, not the people who send a signal to progressives or who are young political talent who need more experience.

How is Biden appointing Kerry, a man with sufficient experience and gravitas, to a newly formed spot on the NSC for climate change, ridiculous? The guy was Secretary of State... this is a sufficient downgrade for him.

I assume Biden will give opportunities to guys like Buttigieg to run something... but so far he's focused on the best candidates. It's not residual TDS to acknowledge when Biden does something good... I know it's tough to swallow because you supported an incompetent madman for 4 years.

Biden is making totally conventional, pedestrian cabinet appointments. But because of the contrast to Trump, you're praising him to the skies for those picks. There is a difference between acknowledging that Biden did something good, and putting him on a pedestal because of it.

Which kind of experience or stature does Kerry have on climate change?

Where have I overly praised Biden? I described him as picking the best people, and I believe that's accurate in this context. Again, it's conventional for presidents to make picks like Biden has and also appoint politicians as well for roles like Secretary of State, Defense, Attorney General, and ambassador to the UN. Right now Biden has mostly gone with experienced public servants rather than politicians.

Kerry has experience in government at the highest levels, and he was Secretary of State. Putting someone with that amount of gravitas at a new position on the NSC for climate change strikes me as reasonable. I assume part of his job will be traveling the world to meet with other governments... so John Kerry showing up will be a bigger deal than some highly credentialed expert.

The next 4 years Trump supporters will be faced with these contrasts on a daily basis. You'll have to get used to it.

Like I already said: it's completely implausible that all the best people by chance happen to come from Biden-/Obamaworld. But let's agree to disagree on this one; we're squabbling over a point which ultimately isn't important.

Regarding Kerry: you make a fair point if this new position is indeed some sort of "ambassador on climate issues", as opposed to "chief expert or thought leader on climate".

After the frantic pace and hyperactive news cycles of the Trump years, a return of bland and boring politics will actually be a welcome change of pace.

I'm contrasting people with the relevant qualifications and experience with the sort of appointees that get made often, namely politicians, or perhaps people of a lesser stature with the right ideological views.
