Unfortunately not possible for everyone but if you can make yourself indisposable at your job you will naturally create leverage and if you have the stomach to act on that leverage it may result in higher wages.
I know everytime we lost an employee I'd just take more responsibility and I'd demand higher wages or I'd walk.
It has to be meaningful responsibility, don't just take on more of what you're currently doing and be someone's bitch. Chase after what the next rung on the ladder is doing.
That was my initial strategy, worked well for me, won't for everyone obviously.
Edit: The above did result in many many months of 340 hours +, you do give up much of your personal free time.
I just applied for a more elaborate version of the next rung on the ladder as i didn't feel like sticking it out for 6 months doing 60-70 hours a week in hopes of a negligible raise with a promo that will have me in the 70+ hours range.
Now im headed into a job thats 40 hours with better pay, better prospects and less stress. Mind you i sent out a lot of applications so its just a matter of persistence even in this down turn.
Don't think its a good idea to stay too long at one place anyway as its not a good way to rise.
