Cops shouldn't be asked to deal with people with mental illness. Most aren't trained for it. Doubt anyone is going to defend the cop here, just a shitty situation where the response is obviously not appropriate.

Let me guess, another tally to apply to the larger cop population so people are taught to hate cops at a time when the complete opposite is needed? Good job Skinned.

didn't know you supported the #defund the police movement. that is EXACTLY their goal: divert funds from militarising the police to mental health / social work / community infrastructure, and have police focus on its core issues.

don't you think it's amazing that you actually support something that you violently oppose when misrepresented by propaganda, lies, and fear-mongering by the right?

I think that today you can get two horrors for the price of one failed revolution: a falsified communism - authoritarian with no opposition party, still capitalistic - with a ruling elite having 99% of wealth. You are missing the big picture, so stick on these EU social-democracies like i explained above; this is my opinion.
Then we can afford laws for environmental issues; 2, even only 1 car(s) instead of 3, no more plastic shits gadgets, etc... Is the price many are ready to pay, including myself.

Dude stop accept shit as reality cmon..
You just discribed the "communism" like you got learned as a sad capitalistic socialism. What does that tell me?
You guys not rdy yet.

We're discussing fringe cases that are being used to justify vast, sweeping cuts to police that blacks themselves don't want because of the obvious, detrimental impact on social order.

As Jesse Jackson said, this is the work of latte liberals who are completely disconnected from what is going on on the ground.

nah not really. ask any cop and they'll tell you they encounter people almost daily that they'd either like a social worker on scene for or social work to handle entirely. homeless, battered wives, autistic people, or any other number of mentally ill people.

i read a lot of people white knighting for cops when in reality cops love some of the aims of #defund. it's mostly a tragedy of democrat messaging with a terribly chosen name. but it sure did spread fast on twitter because of that.

The issue they bring up as the reason to defund police are actually things that should remain a part of policing. Like i usually hear how police bad for shooting down some black guy that in some way or another has committed a crime and that's the driver behind these #defundpolice. Like what are we going to do, send social workers when the next Mike Brown is manhandling a store owner?

einsteins constants was right for the wrong reason too.

let them eliminate things they think will solve certain issues, then when they dont they'll be forced to accept they were wrong. and even if they dont if it helps cops avoid shooting homeless and mentally ill, all the better.

we're in a time where police reform is inevitable, might as well try to steer it in a positive direction.

This is not exactly what their goal is - because BLM and associated movements are heterogeneous and dont represent a unified policy platform. They dont actually agree on their exact goals. A lot of them really want to cripple or outright abolish the current police. For example, take this op-ed in the New York Times from a prominent leader of the movement titled "Yes, we literally mean abolish the police":

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/12/opinion/sunday/floyd-abolish-defund-police.html

In the end, I think that common sense police reform (remove qualified immunity, ban dangerous chokeholds, hire more social workers and psychologists to be deployed in situations where their skills are more relevant than those of classically trained cops) has to come from Republicans. Only when the GOP passes such a reform will the police force have enough trust that it really contains sensible changes and no poison pills.
