Political parties have almost no control over who the nominee is. I'd much rather we go back to the smoke filled rooms... we can't trust the masses to make sensible choices.
That's not true at all. I agree that once the nominees are known to the public, the influence of the party is overblown. WAY overblown. However, prior to candidates announcing exploratory committees, they are communicating with allies, donors, etc. You've probably heard the term before (invisible primary) and THAT'S where the parties have some serious influence.
