The reality is that people who are members of the law enforcement team are treated very differently when they do something wrong than civilians are treated. That's a problem.

It's prominent enough to be a problem. How big of a problem you think it is is purely a matter of opinion.
As is your statement an opinion.
Law Enforcement Officers are not the same as "members of the community". How often are members of the community entrusted (and can face liability and punishment for not intervening) in criminal cases?
The "If he was a citizen this wouldnt hold up" argument isn't valid. It's not the same thing.
You do not have to be in that situation. A LEO can't just leave the scene or allow others to be placed in danger because you don't want to handle it.
And in a lot of criminal cases, I believe a civilian shouldn't get involved but instead be a witness and report it to the authorities.
That's why LEO's have special protections (and they should when their actions are done in good faith). Add on that you have to make immediate life second decisions under extreme levels of stress and it makes total sense why it is harder to convict a police officer.
I can guarantee most of these citizens saying this crap have never had their life in danger to the same extent as a LEO.
That's the real reality.
