so is there some sort of shame associated with attending a peaceful protest if you happen to catch covid-19 during that time?
thought the goal here was to be pro-science and have as much information as possible to drive decision-making so we don't put the at-risk population in even more danger

Considering the police are targeting people who have attended these protests, and "have you been protesting" is a way governments can use to target dissenters, this isn't a surprising decision. I'm not sure if I agree with it or not, because it does compromise contact tracing though.

It's not illegal to attend protests. It is illegal to commit arson and various other felonies. Law abiding protestors (of which we're assured the vast majority are) have nothing to fear.
