Americans do not vote based on policies, they vote based on feelings and party lines.
Here in australia i voted for julia gillard based on her campaign promises, when she broke those promises i voted her out.
Apparently in america doing the exact opposite of what you said you were going to do is perfectly fine.
I vote for a person based on policies, if they lied about all of their policies i would not support them anymore and i would certainly not bend over backwards trying to defend obvious deficiencies.
Why does trump inspire such loyalty from people he showed no loyalty to?
as a foreigner, i obviously don't know many trump supporters in person (except some german ones who fell for the edgy "meme war" and "political outsider who tells it like it is" shtick).
but from what i see on this forum and american media in general, i think there are four main reasons for ppl that are still shilling hard for trump:
1) some are just outright stupid and actually buy into his alternative fact based narratives / propaganda - they don't realise what's actually going on.
2) some people are just simply too proud to admit they were wrong and fooled by this lying sack of shit - so they resort to "trolling" and make this a debating exercise, seeing how far they can get with pivoting, deflecting, spinning, hypocrisy, projecting, and alternative facts.
3) i guess many just treat political parties like their favourite sports team: rooting for and supporting them no matter what. part ignorance, part "tradition"
4) some genuinely don't care about most of his policies and react to the dogwhistles - the borderline racist statements, the feeling that it's ok and that there's nothing to be ashamed of if you're a hateful, narrow-minded bigot
