Maher is right, though. It's one thing to say that deporting millions of people is impossible, it's quite another to say that we shouldn't enforce border law at all. As a sovereign state it's clearly within the rights of the United States to determine who can and can't come into the country.
I'll definitely grant you that much, there are decent reasons to have reasonable controls on immigration. The system that we have now is still built on a foundation of laws that were written for straight up bullshit racist reasons during a much more openly racist time, though, and the parts that we've ignored were absolutely to our benefit.
Essentially, at this point, if we just eject or arrest or otherwise punish everyone who's already here, it's a raw deal because our system is currently set up in a way that we absolutely depend on immigrants coming here illegally and getting utterly shit on because being shit on here is a little better than getting shit on in Mexico. As IceMage points out, it's a misdemeanor. They basically shoplifted a bit of 'Merca for themselves, and they've helped to keep America fat and happy while they did it.
