It sounds to me like the principal is conflating an interest in firearms with crime.

Being a firearms enthusiast /=/ Being a criminal

Did you just not read any of my post?

I have absolutely no problem with the kids being given books, or given other help to boost their education, I just think they're going about it the wrong way, especially given the statements of the principal which seem to be in question given the ending of your post, can you clarify that? Did he not say that, or what? I think it's ok to think guns are cool, but it's not ok to think crime is cool. It's ok to help children, but it's not ok to have them turn in their evil toys to get that help. Now if the toys are being donated to other children who cannot afford toys, I'd be all for it and support this cause, but if they're going to be destroyed by the state for safety reasons, then that should be opposed.

Thanks, I was really hoping to get advice on right and wrong from the local Hitler enthusiast.

No more than you are conflating being a firearms enthusiast with being a good citizen.

I hadn't quoted you originally, I edited my post after that.. not sure if that makes a difference, but anyways I am curious to know if these toys are going to be donated to other kids or be destroyed. I think that will show their true intent. Given all the anti gun talk I highly doubt it though.

Perhaps you are correct in that assessment, at least partially anyway. I don't believe firearms enthusiasm is necessary to being a good citizen. I do, however, believe that firearms ownership is the duty and responsibility of every citizen. Of course, firearms ownership alone isn't enough, I believe ever citizen should receive regular firearms and military training, study civics (history and government) and stay informed of important events and key legislation in the nation. I believe that in order for an individual to make decisions for society, he/she must serve society and be prepared to defend the freedoms they enjoy, with their lives if they must.

if teaching children that there are things more valuable than guns is the result than it is a good educational exercise, nothing to do with progressive

Why is firearms ownership the duty and responsibility of every citizen?

Why must everyone receive military training? This seems inconsequential when the US already has a huge army and a police force.

Your rhetoric may have been valid when there was once a need for citizen run militias, but those days are long gone.

Now it would just be a misallocation of resources.

Air rifles were one of the highlights of my childhood.

So that every citizen is prepared to defend against threats to liberty, both foreign and domestic. Threats to liberty are very much still alive and well.

Did you miss the part about how the US already has an army? Not only an army, but the most advanced and well funded military in the world.

Not to mention just the threat of the US's use of nuclear weapons should they ever be attacked would be enough to deter almost any rogue country.

Your worldview is incredibly detached from reality.
