I am retired and my life is fantastic, i am either travelling, fishing, hiking or playing video games pretty much all the time.

It's pretty interesting. The conclusions that people who are idle will default to drug use was based on mouse studies where they actively took away all other forms of stimulation.

But if you put them in a cage with other mice Toys and food they will almost never go to the drug button.

I think it depends on why you are able to not work, i have enough money to follow my passions and it is all passive and requires no hands on management, i do not need to worry about anything but dopamine hits, and i get more of that from hooking a huge fish on a lure than doing any recreational pharma.
It depends on your outlook on life, an idle introvert can have all the money in the world and will probably just expand their man cave and order a lot more take out until they eventually fill out the entire space they inhabit.

i'd go further than stimulation, and restate it as monkey brain needs struggle, or at the very least challenge.

it's hard for me to envision a world in which people are need receiving the minimum level of "challenge" without a lion's share of that being "struggle". what else challenges human beings at an adequate level for a span of a working adult life if not struggle? while the masses in jobs that are not made a struggle to feed capitalist overlords find an adequate amount of challenge in their life elsewhere? while they, on average, seek to culture themselves with philosophy and art? well philosophy mostly deals with inequality, which that world seeks to eliminate. and art is empowered by struggle, built on struggle and pain.

i see that road leading toward Wall-E, an unbreakable relationship with the practice of removal of struggle and increase of sedimentary depression and lethargy. all while prolonging lifespan.

its a trade off really, to alleviate the worst outcomes for the most unfortunate we also remove the thing that drives those in the middle, to remove the greedy incentives for those at the top. the bottom's happy, the top's furious, and the middle are largely left without a driving purpose. as someone in automation ive seen this coming a long time out. we're headed towards a utopia many while be upset to find themselves in.

Of course. I agree. I would say though that to exist is to struggle. In the same way that "color" necessitates the existence of "shape", so too does "existence" necessitate "struggle".

Oh man Cam will just blatantly lie and then run away when you call him on it? Damn, if only somebody had been pointing that out for (checks calendar) 14 years now.

my worry is that work makes up most of the struggle of life, and when we remove it we wont have enough struggle. apathy is a pretty simple emotion, but its also a word most kids dont learn until highschool. because apathy doesnt manifest itself much in their environment. they're students struggling with academics and harsh social conditions, surrounded by teachers who are far more stressed. we may end up building a world of apathy. id be less worried if i though we had the ability to do it right, give people a meaningful existence while also removing the need for labor. but we wont.

Guess which of those governors is taking money away from poor children and giving it to rich children who don't need it?

I'll give you a hint: Minnesota already had a free lunch program for low income families, with generously high cutoff. Now the pool of resources is going to be split across all children, you know, the ones whos parents drive a Lexus and own a yacht. So governor Walz gets to have a big photo op surrounded by children (one conspicuously wearing an Apple Watch), and the liberal media and social media will fawn all over him because of the superficial optics. Meanwhile, the kids who have to go to school in north minneapolis where gun and drug crime is rampant and multiple students get killed per year, are going to have their resources stripped away as soon as this surplus turns into a deficit. All so we can feed those kids from Eden Prairie and Wayzata.

That's the thing about "free breakfast and lunch", TINSTAAFL. Walz's cronies over at 'Feeding Our Future' were supposed to provide 'free lunches' too, and they served as many needy children as this bill will
