I think we should establish certain age rules around that. If a 5 year old kills someone with a knife for example its an accident and would be just like a horse runs over someone and kills. They should be treated with too young and naive to be punished with any jail. If they are 7 to 12 they are deemed with very bad kids and some kind of juvenile detention center as punishment or strict parenting need to apply. If they are 12-17 they should serve time and or pay a fine, but a lighter sentence appropriate with the crime. If 18+ then its life unless its an accident or negligence. If they are serial killers with intention to kill for pleasure for example then its a bullet to the head and burn them with fire.

A month later a new update
In response to the backlash, AG Keith Ellison announced today that he will request Governor Walz to take this prosecution away from County Attorney Mary Moriarty and reassign it to Ellison, a move which has only been done once in Minnesota history outside of police prosecutions.
Ellison said he would try the suspects as adults, though I'm not sure what power he has to throw away this plea deal at this point, its certainly not a common area of MN law so I'm hard pressed to understand the formalities

Quite the dramatic turnaround. We can say its Ellison doing the right thing for the first time in his entire tenure, but only after severe public backlash forced his hand. Mary Moriarty already took on another high profile teen offender case and promised to reduce charges. And lets remember, this is what the people of her district voted for. She explicitly campaigned on refusing to charge teenagers as adults and to give them slaps on the wrist even in the most serious crimes. So this is exactly what she promised, setting murderers free. People voted for that.
so Ellison will take over this case and maybe the teens will actually face real justice. Meanwhile, Moriarty will continue one;

In this case, the 17 year old girl who murdered two people did so by killing her own accomplices in a carjacking when she drove the stolen SUV into a tree during a high speed police chase. I for one recognize that to be a lot less heinous an offense, so I imagine there's a lot less outrage over it. Killing other criminals instead of an innocent member of the public, the deaths being unintentional in the moment (but transferred intent from the carjacking). Its still a huge problem and she should receive at least a decade in prison, because Moriarty's quest to set free all teenager carjackers and refuse to send them to prison is precisely why there are so many carjackings in the twin cities right now. Once they realize there's no punishment for carjackings, and you can even kill someone and get a slap on the wrist, the gang bangers went nuts and now we've got a +100% jump YtY

Parents should be responsible for kids
if they brake the law,
parents should get the consequences.

"One of the reasons being a prosecutor is so difficult is because you have to look at a case where there's an unimaginable harm and then decide what accountability, justice and punishment are appropriate to request. What will serve in the best interest of public safety?" Moriarty said during her news conference.

"Every day, prosecutors in the state and around the country are committed to do that job. At least they were, as long as they were throwing the book at everyone — even some who were innocent. Even when they threw children in prison at alarming rates, no one intervened.

"Now, when we see reform prosecutors elected, other elected officials have decided that we cannot use our discretion and make very hard decisions."

Under intense, rapid-fire questioning from McKeever's relatives and the media, Moriarty defended her overall approach to prosecuting juveniles, saying that the criminal justice system has long focused on doling out lengthy prison sentences — an approach that "we know very well hasn't kept us safer."

"We could send this 15-year-old to prison. He would get out in his early 30s," Moriarty said.

"As he should," interjected McKeever's sister, Tiffynnie Epps.

"We know from research," Moriarty continued, "he would be incredibly traumatized and come out more likely to commit violence."

She was drowned out by shouts from members of the crowd, who accused her of setting an equally dangerous precedent by not seeking harsher penalties for a young person arrested for a murder.

"Recall her! Recall her today," yelled Shontell Bishop, McKeever's cousin, as Moriarty walked away.
