Pretty impressed with Biden taking full responsibility for what's happening and sticking to his guns. He's very clearly not trying to deflect blame and standing by his decision.

Pretty nice to see. This is what telling it like it is actually looks like. Making the hard decisions and then standing by them.

The story of how all of this played out will be written in the months and years to come. Biden clearly wants the headline to be the buck stopping with him, while seeding all kinds of arguments for why it actually doesn’t.

Even the WaPo doesn't get fooled as easily.

They attack him because he ended a war. *gasp*
Ostensibly, they're blasting the botched execution, but it's pretty clear that for these neocon warmongers (who are coming crawling out of their caves to write scathing opinion pieces in WaPo, the Atlantic and so on) are actually pissed about the withdrawal itself.

dont worry, these guys will find another playground soon as they need constant conflict to keep the machinery going and the army busy

yemen maybe? libya is a terrorist hotspot

i wouldnt be suprised if the syria theater warms up again, has been pretty quiet and they can shoot another shot "assad used chemical weapons"

problem is though that both libya and syria would likely involve other big players

they will take a break, but something is gonna go down soon enough

there are ~81 million people in America who get fooled this easily. they got completely bamboozled into thinking that someone who has made awful decision after awful decision during his 40+ years as a taxpayer-funded swamp demon would suddenly improve his decision-making

it’s no surprise a user like thor (who lost a political argument to the flat-earther) would managed to be impressed by such an unmitigated example of foolish bureaucratic procedures

lol wouldn’t surprise anyone here. he didnt get the memo that even the administration/govt he worships both find the wuhan lab leak theory to have credibility.

he is an expert on torturing small organisms and licking petri-dishes, that we have confirmed. doubt his expertise has anything to do with foreign policy, military strategy, economic realities, or infectious diseases. but it sure doesn’t stop him from yammering about it with unwarranted self-importance!

inb4 that user’s typical repressed frustrated homophobic retort

in other news re: Afghanistan:

When another reporter asked why Biden went to Camp David and even returned there after going to the White House for his Monday speech, Sullivan was forced to defend the president’s work habits and insisted Joe was “deeply engaged” in the situation.

Later, Sullivan admitted Biden had not talked to any foreign heads of state, which is shocking because many allies had troops working with the US, and most foreign nationals are presumably also desperate to get out of Afghanistan

The thing is, after Biden specifically withdrew from Afghanistan at great cost to America's reputation, it would require insane mental gymanstics to justify a new foreign intervention in a muslim country soon thereafter.
I don't see a new, full-fledged intervention before 2025.

This article seems to equate not taking responsibility with explaining the reasons.

Pretty silly IMO

When someone claims to take full responsibility, but then comes up with a myriad of reasons why nothing that happened was actually his fault, then he's only paying lip-service to taking responsibility.

To be more specific: of course Biden is correct in pointing out that the Afghan military was corrupt, incompetent, weak-willed and disloyal. Or how the intelligence community collectively failed when it concluded that it would take the Taliban months to years to reconquer the country.

But Biden has 40+ years of experience with foreign policy and working with the intelligence community. He saw them fail time and time again and lead the country into costly debacle after costly debacle. Biden is a guy who boasted about being super experienced and qualified on the campaign trail, the friendly media constantly stressed his foreign policy bonafides. Biden has such a trove of experience, so him falling for such a painfully obvious misjudgement by his generals and intelligence community is a personal failure of leadership and judgement. It's not like there were no cautionary voices, or like the corruption and dysfunctionality of the Afghan state were a secret. Biden could and should have known better than to listen to these moronic swamp creatures who kept claiming that the Taliban were weak, the Afghan military reliable and everything would be fine.

Side note: Trump not really listening to the intelligence community was one of the best aspects of his presidency, even if he ignored and antagonized them for the wrong reasons.

Again, explaining what happened and why doesn't mean you aren't taking responsibility.

He never said it wasn't his fault. He said point blank that he made the decision and the consequences are because of his decision.

Biden's position was laid out pretty clearly. Bad things happened during the pull out because of many different failures, but the decision to pull out and thus the responsibility for those things happening is on him.
