Trump didn't lose the Senate during his midterm, he expanded his margin in the chamber. Since 1932, Johnson, Ford, Carter, HW Bush and Trump failed to get reelected.

the senate didn’t flip in 2018. republicans managed to gain seats. there were several presidents who were not re-elected since 1932:

Truman (succeeded FDR so his first election was in 1948, did not seek re-election in 1952)
JFK (assassinated in 1963)
LBJ (succeeded JFK so his first election was in 1964, did not seek re-election in 1968)
Ford (succeeded Nixon, lost to Carter in his first election in 1976)
Carter (lost re-election to Nixon in 1980)
GHWB (lost re-election to William Jefferson Bythe III in 1992)
