Good move by him. He has nothing to gain by going to the debate, as he already has a strong voter base, and the people who are anti-trump aren't likely to swap over. Not only this, but the debate is likely going to be somewhat set up to attack him anyway.

By not doing the debate he has generated even more attention than if he had just gone to the debate.

Instead of doing the debate he is hosting some rally for wounded veterans, so now he can play the card of "While you guys were busy doing debates, I was helping our soldiers".

His voter base will like seeing him "sticking it to the man", and will become even happier about him, making them more likely to be enthusiastic about actually voting.

It won't really generate any more negativity against him, as he did absolutely nothing wrong by not attending a debate.

I thought he was bluffing, but I was wrong. It does appear to be a good move by him, but we will have to see. The media narrative could be that Cruz or Rubio run away with this debate in Trump's absence.

If Cruz wins Iowa by a hair, this will look like a dumb move by Trump. If Trump wins, he will look like a genius.
