Also note that these claims reek of revisionist history by politicians whose personal legacy is at stake. Merkel, for example, nowadays claims she always knew that Putin/the Russians couldn't be trusted and that she always saw the invasion coming. Yet while she was still in charge, she moved forward and defended the construction of Nord Stream II, pursued an energy policy which would greatly increase her country's dependence on natural gas which only the Russians could conceivably supply in the intended quantity, greenlit the sale of strategically crucial German gas storages to Russian companies, and so on and forth. So either she's comically incompetent, or she did in fact not see the Russian invasion coming and is simply lying to distract from her embarrassing miscalculation regarding Russia.
