Whatever we were doing the past few months, it was clearly not working. The key difference with you guys is that you have a much higher rate of naturally acquired immunity from infections, so that the number of vulnerable people left is far lower in the UK than Germany.
Same problems are also found in the Netherlands and Belgium, France is also catching up quickly.

The tldr is that your approach of opening up in mid-summer was the right call and allowed you to reach a dicey equilibrium which has, so far, carried you through winter without many restrictions. Here in Germany, we are basically forced to pick one out of three unpleasant options, triaging, locking down or mandating vaccines.


If we never locked down to begin with, this pandemic would have been over last August. Nothing of value would have been lost.

After the dozens of millions deaths spared because of vaccines and restrictions we will still have -horrible selfish people- who will claim it wasn't necessary.

They will be completely illegal and identified, life will be 100 times harder for them, so most of them will never come back.
