I'm in favor of personal choice, but it necessarily has to come with personal responsibility for all consequences arising from this choice. Restrictions for the vaccinated or insufficient medical treatment for non-covid patients are unacceptable, so when the ICU's start overflowing with unvaccinated covid patients, the only options are a deprioritization of the unvaccinated or a vaccine mandate. If the former is not practical, or deemed to be ethically beyond the pale, then a vaccine mandate is the only remaining option.

We don't have a vaccine mandate, we've got similar vaccine uptake to you, similar levels of covid circulating, much lower ICU capacity and we're ok. So don't act like it's doomsday when it's not

Whatever we were doing the past few months, it was clearly not working. The key difference with you guys is that you have a much higher rate of naturally acquired immunity from infections, so that the number of vulnerable people left is far lower in the UK than Germany.
Same problems are also found in the Netherlands and Belgium, France is also catching up quickly.

The tldr is that your approach of opening up in mid-summer was the right call and allowed you to reach a dicey equilibrium which has, so far, carried you through winter without many restrictions. Here in Germany, we are basically forced to pick one out of three unpleasant options, triaging, locking down or mandating vaccines.
