That would have been glorious but I don't know if we could have ever pulled that off based on the compound that he was hiding in. The sheer risk involved, on top of the fact that they weren't even sure if that was even OBL in the first place, made several of them advise against a ground mission anyway. And then the first chopper crashing on top of it; I don't know what it would have taken to pull off an extraction on top of that.

Obama also promised to reduce drone use, but I don't hold it against him at all. Flexibility is more important.



Its part of the reason why I believe the events so staunchly. Real plans rarely go completely smoothly.

The search for Osama bin Laden was stretched over two presidencies. In a background briefing for reporters in 2005 officials said that the identity was determined of the courier who ultimately led to bin Laden. That would place a key moment in the search back in the Bush administration. If you're going to award credit to someone it should go to the Navy Seals who planned out, coordinated & executed the mission, not the sitting POTUS who gave the 'go ahead'. If Osama Bin Laden was killed under a Republican president, we wouldn't hear the end of it.

But since Osama Bin Laden was killed under a Democratic president, it was a group effort.

Its really the one point that Republicans can't knock him for.
