In terms of a virus the only limiting factor is survival, hence why rhinoviruses and coronaviruses become less virulent over time. The virus is less likely to spread its genes if it is more deadly, hence why most common sicknesses have limited symptoms and a high survival rate.

Because politicians are clueless they have created a dysgenic social policy system that follows your assumptions in this country. Because of those naive policies, the average IQ of the USA has dropped a full standard deviation in the past 40 years.

The reason why the movie idiocracy was written was because of idea patterns like yours. Those assumptions lead to bad policy.

From an evolutionary perspective, a virus does not care what happens to its old host once it has been spread to a new host. For a virus like covid which is capable of presymptomatic transmission and for which the most infectious period lies right around symptom onset, days before even the quickest cases of death occur, this evolutionary pressure to become less deadly isn't very strong.
