... and a few years later, people with this attitude are bewildered that a Trump-like figure came to power and wonder how it could happen yet again.

At least something we can agree on.

i wasn't suprised a trump like figure came around the first time and i wont be a second time either. i was suprised he beat HRC, and then suprised he lost to Biden. pendulum will be at center the next time.

we just happen to live in a world where if i try to convince someone to get the vaccine with science, logic, studies, empathy, etc i'll hear back: "but i heard ____", "i read on facebook ______", "i saw a study that said _______", "yeah but do u still trust the CDC after those emails?", etc.

but if i say "if u want to go to the packers game get vaccinated and bring your card and ID, they'll require it", those same idiots will line up.

inconvenience via business and entertainment has always been 10x more effective than studies, people who wanted it got it before they read or understood studies, people who didnt cant be swayed by them. but getting a burger on friday night sways all.

this reality has been clear since mask mandates in businesses took effect and got people wearing them when governors mandates didnt. if u want to enter menards put a mask on, and they all did, even if it was just inside menards.

I never claimed otherwise tbh. Of course science or this or that argument will not convince the holdouts to finally get off their asses and get jabbed. What I disagree with is the premise that society must wait for these people to get their shot before we can dare a return to normalcy.

Now that everyone who is even remotely at risk from covid can protect himself by getting vaccinated, there is no more justification to deny people their self-responsibility. An infection is no longer an imminent risk to everyone else - it is only a threat to those who made a conscious decision to pass on the vaccine. Hence, covid is no longer the collectivistic threat to public health that it once was - it has become a personal affair, and it's time we start treating it as such. Additionally, the more contagious variants and lowered efficacy against transmission have made herd immunity impossible, so what exactly are we still waiting for?

De Blasio orders are pretty dumb and it's going to create second class citizens largely made up of minorities , poor people and the religious.

Just a quick stat, there is somewhere between 1.1-1.5 million Jews living in the greater NY metro, it's the greatest concentration of Jews in any one city. There's more Jews there than like the next 4-5 next largest cities in the US combined. Of those a sizable portion of them are orthodox Jews who are vehemently anti-vaccine on religious grounds.

The left time after time tries to force people to do shit and talks down to groups/people who dare question or say no. It's not a matter of stupidity or intelligence. I'm vaccinated and I think people should get vaccinated but government here is stepping over the line. Just chill out, let these people choose for themselves, I honestly feel like there wouldn't be this level of digging in heels if the government wasn't trying so fucking hard to force people to do something.

Now that everyone who is even remotely at risk from covid can protect himself by getting vaccinated, there is no more justification to deny people their self-responsibility. The unvaccinated spreading the virus to others is no longer a great concern since the infected will be protected by his own vaccination, or have made the deliberate choice to be unvaccinated.

More contagious variants and lowered efficacy against transmission have made herd immunity impossible and the very high protection against hospitalization and death have given everyone the tools to protect himself. Therefore, covid is no longer the collectivistic threat to public health that it once was - it has become a personal affair, and it's time we start treating it as such. What are we waiting for?

maybe in Hitler's playground it's different but in my area there's almost nothing restricted at all. what happens in cess pools like LA or NYC i dont give even a shred of a fuck about.

no masks, no lockdowns, no businesses requiring vaccines, nothing.

Here in Germany, we still have to wear masks in most public places, clubs and lots of cultural events like the opera are still shut down or severely limited. In spite of a vaccination rate which has overtaken that of the US (sad given your tremendous headstart) and lower case numbers than any of our western neighbors, our government still isn't willing to lift further restrictions. By the contrary, they are already talking about new restrictions for the coming fall and winter, among them rules which would ostracize the unvaccinated from pretty much all aspects of social life. Our ministry of health even wants to enshrine mask and social distancing mandates until next spring (sic!) completely independent from the number of cases or the vaccine progress (sic!!).

Maybe that helps to explain where I'm coming from in this debate. ;)
