Other countries got their first cases the same week we did and handled it much better. We are basically racing Brazil for the title of worst handled pandemic.
If Trump had taken adequate action we probably still wouldn't be South Korea, but we could at least be Germany.
We simply dont know the extent to which the virus was already spread in the community at the time the first cases became public in various countries. When its case numbers started going up, Italy actually enacted local lockdowns really quick, and wasnt THAT slow to roll out a lockdown for the entire northern half of the country. Stiill was a huge disaster. France and Germany had rising case numbers at roughly the same time, France used a much stricter lockdown than Germany, yet Germany got its case numbers under control much quicker, etc. Or compare Belgium and the Netherlands, which is a difference like night and day although they are geographic neighbors with similar population density. The point being that some countries just got more lucky than others, and that this luck factor also plays some role in explaining the difference in outcome we see between countries.
Considering the way corona literally exploded in NYC, I would assume that it had, under the radar, already dispersed a ton before it was noticed.
Anyway, my other point is that we are starting to see the same kind of surge in the daily corona numbers in almost all industrialized countries over the last 1-2 weeks, the same kind of surge that the U.S. suddenly experienced in mid-June.
Australia, Japan, Singapore, Israel, Romania, Serbia - they're all seeing a strong surge, while Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Spain and several other European countries began seeing a consistent upward trend. Countries like the Netherlands and Canada might also be on the verge of surging numbers.
Just go to this site:
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countriesand look at the charts for the countries I just mentioned. We still need to wait another 1-2 weeks to be sure, but to me it looks like a larger pattern.
