Ousting pro-impeachment Republicans in solid-red seats with a Biden midterm upcoming seemed like a reasonable approach at the time. From the point of view of a GOP base voter, even sacrificing this seat for one cycle would have been worth it in a 235-200 R House or something along those lines. No one knew that a ton of various factors would come together over the following months to put even the minimum goal of Republican control of the House in question, to the point that every single seat ended up mattering.
