Pence was accused of influencing Trump to make crazy religious policy, Harris now will be criticized as if she's spoonfeeding Biden CRT. Biden mostly avoided this by being the likeable jokester that he is, he let Obama take the L's and was there with sunglasses on to look cool and shoot crowd members thumbs ups when they took W's.

That and he has the privilege of buddies from across the aisle in the legislature like Cocaine Mitch and Lindsay "breakthrough" Graham when he needs a vouch. His service record is a double edged sword, had to dodge bullets in primaries over 1970s stuff, gives him centrist appeal due to maybe being able to work with senate, and as he's seen it all told all he was a return to normalcy (read: status quo 90s-2000s politics).

Sure, DeSantis represents a more competent and disciplined Trumpism. The cruelty and evilness is more measured. Then again, if Trump doesn't run and it's a battle over who can be the most Trump-like, it could be a race to see how low people can go to appeal to the nutty base, and DeSantis doesn't strike me as one who would set limits for himself.
