Yesterday we were reached by the news that a man guilty of rape twice (was of one with another man) and tortured a woman in a basement receives SEK 840,000 in damages from the state.
He was convicted of the crimes and under normal circumstances the sentence would have been 10 years. Because he was under the age of 18 and had committed multiple rapes, he received a "discount" and he was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison. (Yes, you get lower sentences in Sweden if you commit several crimes!)
The Supreme Court then set the sentence at 2 years in prison because he was younger at the time of the crimes than previously thought. This meant that he had been in custody longer than his prison sentence and then in Sweden you get damages.
He is also still in Sweden despite being sentenced to deportation.
There must be legislative changes now! Increase penalties for rape, remove the "discount" for multiple crimes and because the perpetrator is young in rape cases. And make sure that deportations for crimes are carried out!
Nothing else makes sense, especially from the perspective of those affected.
