I hear people saying that wsj is a conservative platform but I’ve been reading it for years and I largely don’t see it. Maybe they’re just conflating pro corporate with being conservative?

Pro-corporate is conservative in absolute terms, just maybe not in American terms since our entire political spectrum is only the top right corner.

To understand modern politics, one needs to look at at least two dimensions: an economic and a social/cultural one. WSJ neatly fits into the "economically conservative (= pro business)" bin, but they are centrists at best when it comes to the social dimension of politics.
Overall, I would rate them as Libertarians (economically conservative, socially liberal) rather than conservatives. (The other corner, economically liberal but socially conservative, is what polsci calls "populists" btw).

In recent years, most western societies have seen the salience of the social/cultural dimension go up while economic policy debates had faded. Corona might change that though.
