The Italian government is ridiculous. I'm so glad our government in Spain doesn't give a fuck about this bullshit virus and is not only not cancelling mass events, demonstrations, and celebrations, but encouraging people to go on with their lives as normal as long as they take precautions and are aware that there's a risk of becoming infected.

So far the only thing they've done is shut down several hundreds of centers for the elderly, since senior citizens are pretty much the only ones in risk of suffering serious consequences from the disease.

Yep. Cases are going up. But it's more damaging to halt the economy and cause mass panic.

There's the theory that the government, which has feminism as one of it's priorities, will begin restricting events now that the woman's day is over, but I hope not.

you are aware that italy has the 2nd most confirmed cases worldwide, right? more than 10 times as many as spain, 60 times the critical cases, 20 times the death toll, with new confirmed infections growing exponentially by the week ( https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ ). of course that doesn't justify complete overreaction or outright mass panic, but it certainly warrants more severe measures.

i'm curious what exactly you consider 'ridiculous', and how you think the virus would spread without containing measures. what do you think would happen if the italian government was equally chill and didn't "give a fuck about this bullshit virus".

No, it does not, lol.

Deaths per diagnosed infection is not a viable metric for inter-country comparisons as long as testing rates and diagnostic methods vary wildly between countries.
A country that does almost no testing will only see the most severe cases pop up in its "number of infected people"-part of the statistic, leading to a very inflated mortality rate.

Yes, the American healthcare system does suck, it is worse than that of France or South Korea, and elderly people have a better chance of surviving the coronavirus epidemic in these countries than in the U.S. - but this assessment has to come from past experience with these countries' healthcare systems. Such a conclusion cannot credibly be based on data which is as compromised and unreliable as the coronavirus mortality rates.

You're right. My way is a pretty inaccurate measurement but I was using it to illustrate the point Ghot's methodology is completely asinine.

Don't worry. You'll figure it out.

I'll never figure out why you're so dumb. It's one of life's greatest mysteries.

The only thing more infuriating than that political narrative on this situation is why the public is still giving any credence to these partisan narratives or even listening to them at all.

This virus is one of the last-partisan issues in a long long time. Well, at least outside of the U.S.

It should be completely non-partisan. Yet they somehow find a way to spin a narrative into it.

Well, tbh, I think it's kinda hard to disentangle "the narrative" from "justified criticism of a lackluster government response". Democrats try to blow the extent of the disease and the degree of failure in the government response out of proportion to score political points. Similarly, Trump and Republicans deflect, put blame on Democrats and local authorities (which happen to be Democrats too in most of the hotspots) and downplay the threat level because it politically serves them.

tldr: American politics is a shitshow.

that's pretty rich coming from someone who defended trump's comments regarding the lethality of covid-19, directly contradicting facts and expert opinions:
