okay I had to double check that one yeah they're both crammed like sardines, at least in those former soviet apartment blocs
but the price to buy an apartment is about equal to a year of rent in western EU
they're all living in like 1/4 the footprint of US homes at most
Something like 80% of the Russian population lives in these former soviet blocs, lol. Russia is an incredibly urbanized country, they dont have large suburbs with spacious houses and gardens. Which would be totally uneconomic due to the cold weather anyway.
There are tons of nice apartments in Western Europe btw, it's not like we actually live like the sardines, lol.
Oh yeah, density has its upside too: it makes distances short and public transport feasible. I can reach my office and, in earlier days, my university within 15 minutes by public transports or by bike, summer or winter. I have a large supermarket nearby, can do my groceries within 10 minutes. I dont even own a car because I simply dont need one where I live. Not owning a car saves me something like €300-400 per month in write-offs, insurance and gas. I have a large park nearby, some of the most beautiful tourist destinations of my country lie just 1 hour to the south of my city, and since my apartment lies in a reduced-traffic area, there is only very little street noise either.
Must be nice spending 2+ hours per day in endless shitty commute tho.
