It really depends on the state. What state do you live in/are interested in and I'll show you. Most states require signature validation and that's the biggest hurdle. If your signature doesn't match, you're flagged. Often times, your vote is just thrown out because people don't respond to the verification requests. The verification requests vary by state but you typically have to show some sort of identification, proof of residency, etc. I have a very sloppy signature so I go through this process every time I vote.
Again, most people aren't interested in these details and they just want to bitch and moan. They are a bunch of snowflakes IMO.
For a small scale case in point
Pennsylvania removed the requirement to check signatures (Republicans' faults probably)
Signatures don't matter if witnesses are bullied (in Michigan and likely in every other big city)
