Pence is obviously going to have to flip on those issues.
Trump is a unique candidate. He nomination was a hostile takeover of the GOP. He wasn't going to find anyone who agreed with him on every issue.
But Trump needed to rally his Conservative and Evangelical base. Pence will help do that. He's also pretty clean, not too much political baggage considering how long he has been in politics.
His political advisers were correct to reccommend Pence over Christie and Gingrich. I think it's pretty obvious Trump wanted someone else, but he listened to his political team and the RNC on this one.
There were better picks out there for VP, but a lot of them said no. Pence was a solid get. A lot of potential Republican VP candidates probably didn't want to potentially damage their political career by being Trump's runningmate, a person who has really frustrated the GOP brass and leadership.
He already had the republican base and most of the religious fanatics. It was the establishment republicans and donors that didn't like him, so I think the only advantage of having Pence as VP is that his campaign will get more big donor money, which he desperately needs.
But if that happens, Clinton can just call him a hypocrite for accepting big money when his main selling point is that he isn't controlled by the corporations. He's backed himself into a corner and I think he made a bad move.
Why not go for a liberal republican? The only way he can win is to get some liberal voters on his side, including the blacks and the hispanics. All the Trump supporters are in too deep and hate Clinton so much there is virtually nothing Trump could do to dissuade them from voting for him.
Just my opinion of course...
