There are ample issues on which liberals, yourself included, are completely blind and oblivious to glaring patterns, to obvious future developments, and often times to human nature itself. You might be right or wrong in your assessment of me, but you are definitely, 100% mistaken when it comes to the high horse you're think you're sitting on.

Cool story bro.

I like how when I show you're wrong you always pivot to talking about "general liberals" and start totally ignoring the topic. It's a nice consistent signal for when you don't have anything left.

The topic we were debating was a hypothetical question: "was it justified or unjustified to have hope XYZ in Trump?"
There are no definitive answers on questions like that, opinions on such an issue are always subjective. So no, you did not prove me wrong, you gave your opinion which contradicts mine; everything beyond that is up for debate or subjective judgement calls.

Since I'm a fair debater, I'll admit that I made a mistake when I brought up the hope of Trump "putting aside his ego for just a single moment". Yes, this particular hope was always unrealistic. But on the broader issue, the question whether it was always unjustified to hope that Trump would come up with a passable handling of the pandemic, I stand by my point that this hope was not unjustified.

Throughout his presidency, he has outsourced several issues which he doesnt have a particular interest in, for example brokering Middle East peace deals or selecting judicial nominees. Was it really completely unrealistic to think that Trump might go "ah, fuck it, I'll let Fauci deal with this crap"? Was it really always unrealistic for Trump to think about how an out of control pandemic might be a death sentence for his reelection prospects? Was it really silly or stupid to think that his campaign might bring out red MAGA-masks and rock them?

The more I think about it, the more stupid I think your outlook on all of this is. Considering these possibilities to have always been out of the question, even back in February/March/April, is itself a stupid opinion.

Trump is a career con man with a big apple sized ego. and for years the crowd giving him the most pats on the back are the least scientific, most religiously zealous, loud jerks. if the topic is anything but conservative justices faith in Trump has always been and always will be foolish.

I had faith that he would not be a warmonger or start new wars, he did not. (Although the opportunity presented itself multiple times.)
I had faith that he would foster a good economy, and he did.
I had faith that he would pursue deregulatory policies, cut back on red tape and rein in the federal government, he mostly did.
I had faith that he would not be a pushover and keep fighting in the battle over public opinion against a biased and crooked mainstream media, he did. (How much success he had in this quest is a different story.)
I had faith that he would be an immigration hawk, and that's what he was.
I had faith that he would spur a paradigm shift on issues like free trade and China, he probably did. (We need to see how the Biden admin handles these fields before we can make a definite call on this point.)

Trump has always had a reptilian cunning, and he was clever where many were not in the run-up to the 2016 election. He has lost several steps in the years since then, but Covid was still an exceptionally unforced blunder.

His supporters will follow whatever line he decides to take, he just took a very dumb line.

Eh, I dont think that they would go along if Trump came out in support of things like BLM, amnesty or a hefty carbon tax. The reason why his base stuck with him through all the scandals and fumbles is that he stayed where the base was, always tried to give the base what it wants.

Definitely had no success. Way too much backpedaling and his incorrect usage of sarcasm about injecting disinfectant threw all of his credibility out the window.

Within reason. But if Trump wanted masks people would wear masks. You can be against lockdowns without going full conspiracy. He's slipped mentally, and it's not like he had a particularly high floor.

You're using generalities like "justified to have hope" and "on the broader issue" to avoid the real issue, which is that Trump never gave any indication at any stage of his candidacy or his presidency that he would appropriately handle a real emergency. He has always been fundamentally disinterested in governing and this was apparent the entire time.

When you say he "outsourced" you mean he ignored them. To call it "outsourcing" is a supremely dishonest framing. He hasn't been "outsourcing" to professionals, he's been letting Kushner handle things he doesn't care about, which is virtually all governing.

Anyway, I'm bored with this. It's obvious to pretty much everybody who wasn't on the Trump train that he was never going to respond appropriately to a real emergency because he has never, ever, ever, ever, shown any interest in actual governing, and it's easy to see the pattern.

More dishonest framing.

Trump says everything at once, and his base cherry picks what they want to hear and ignore everything else.
