I'm so sick and tired of this shit. Europe's political leaders have utterly failed at their most crucial task of providing timely vaccinations. And despite having had one year to come up with less socially devastating countermeasures than unimaginative blanket lockdowns, they have failed miserably at this task too. Normally, heads should be rolling (politically speaking) all across Europe for this complete and total failure. :fume:

Police on Saturday carried out inspections at a pharmaceuticals plant near Rome where an Italian newspaper reported that millions of doses of the AstraZeneca Plc Covid-19 vaccine have been held.

Mario Gargiulo, president of European biologics for Catalent Inc., said in a phone interview that the military-police inspection at the company’s Anagni plant found “everything in order.”


Daily La Stampa reported earlier on Wednesday that a stock of 29 million doses possibly ready for export to the U.K. was at the plant. If confirmed, the vaccine stock held in Italy would amount to almost twice as much as have so far been received by the European Union.


The doses at the company’s vial-filling facility were discovered after a report by the European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, Stampa said. At least some of them were produced by Astra sub-contractor Halix in the Netherlands, according to the newspaper.

Catalent ships its finished vaccine vials to AstraZeneca’s Belgian distribution center and isn’t involved in their further destinations, Gargiulo said. The manager said he has no idea if doses at the plant were intended for export to the U.K.

AstraZeneca has failed to deliver more than half of the doses that it promised the EU for the first quarter. The bloc has started negotiations with the U.K. over how to share Astra’s output from a new plant that’s due to come on stream in the Netherlands in the next few weeks, with the EU insisting that it should get the lion’s share, according to two EU officials.

Gargiulo also said that tens of millions of doses present at the plant include bulk drug substance, doses in the bottling process and those already in vials for quality control and awaiting shipping. Dose counts at the plant vary daily, he said. The inspection involved records of shipments in and out of the plant, and not manufacturing or quality controls.

Representatives for Astra, the Commission and the Italian government didn’t immediately respond to a requests for comment.
