That's one facet, but he also needs to do sick burns on Trump in a way that specifically doesn't alienate the MAGA voters for supporting him. It's a tricky dance that he isn't nearly talented enough to make work.
Meanwhile Trump can just rail on DeSantis all he wants because DeSantis doesn't have a group like that under him.
Well, as soon as the also-rans drop out of the race, it will become clear that DeSantis is the only alternative to Trump. Then DeSantis will also have roughly 50% of the GOP base behind him, even if not all of them are as devoted to him as Trump's base is to Trump.
Also note that DeSantis has only begun starting to hold Trump accountable for his record in office (empowering Fauci, promoting the vaccines, running up the deficit, contemplating amnesty, nominating folks like Christopher Wray and Mark Milley to their position, etc.)
By contrast, Trump doesn't strike me as someone who has a lot of actual ammunition left to be used against DeSantis. Sure, he will continue to mock him and call him names, but at this point, will that sway any primary voters?
This might be the copium speaking, but imho, we're headed to a tight two-way race similar to Obama/Clinton in 2008, rather than to a repeat of 2016 where Trump prevailed over a hyper-fractured field.
