I was hoping for some interesting pushback on my post. Maybe Goom is on vacation.

One disconnect we've been having on PaRD the last number of days is politics vs policy. People keep mixing the two. I'm more focused on politics because voters don't choose based on which policy papers are more substantive and persuasive.

It doesn't matter which flavor of politics you like and who you vote for, policy never changes.
Because at the end of the day all the policy and laws are written by corporate funded think tanks with an army of lawyers on payroll to write the bills.
Members of congress are nothing more than a rubber stamp these days.
That's why nothing changes, I am of the opinion that if Brain Tumor won the 2008 election that we would of gotten the "Affordable Care Act" written by the insurance companies anyways.

This is the type of voter who would choose Trump or RFK Jr. over Harris/Walz. Not for any good reason, just falling back on cynical platitudes. It's almost a personality type.

I don't chime in as much to give a +1
I think we mostly agree on the takeaway, I covered it https://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=104463833&f=119&p=665212575

I was expecting worse from Kamala and she didn't screw up. No big flubs. She spent almost as long talking about policy as bashing Trump with cheap shots, which was far more than anyone else at the DNC. Repeated some of the same very tired attack lines Biden has been wearing out, and did some wild lies that I think even a casual observer had to scratch their head at (Trump is going to... hike your sales tax?). The policy message she had was incredibly vague, maybe 4 times in that long speech she mentioned what she'd do in office. But I was expecting nothing at all.

Its clearly a win for Kamala, the bar was set by Joe Biden and any speech Kamala gave where she didn't cough up a ball of phlegm on stage would be a win. And it looks like RFK jr and Trump conspired to take the wind out of her sails. It definitely gave her a chance to try to convert some of the artificially generated pure media buzz momentum into actual 'vibes' with voters, but the people she needs to win over are the ones who see the price of groceries and rent and her campaign strategy seems to be to ignore the elephant in the room with her

You're making my point brother. You belong to the cynical, anti-establishment voting block which doesn't really care about specific policy, you just want someone who presents as someone who would be a "disrupter".

And there's a lot of people like you. This group is overrepresented on PaRD.

@bold: I appreciate the new signature.

I thought your previous post had a bit too much copium but this revised version is good.

I find it useful to watch reactions from the media and focus groups because honestly I don't know what appeals to normal people. Big crowds and enthusiasm for political leaders turns me off personally. I don't want to be part of a mob. But the reaction to her speech and the focus groups were very good. Van Jones on CNN made a point that the scolding Democratic party of trigger warnings is dead. It's something different now. And I thought that was a useful observation. It's hard to have watched this convention and thought, "these people aren't like me and the people I know". The main lineup was focused on themes that most Americans identify with, which included points where Trump went against those themes.

That's the vibe I get. I think they covered all the bases as best as they could, and we'll see how the American people react to that.
