I mean, China experienced significant slowdowns before everybody else and its always possible that the new disease is sars like so it's very contagious but can be stopped at airports so youre the only country slowed down.

It's not purely nice to cover up but the incentive is clear and understandable

This is what it's all about. China may be complicit in the bioweapon theory, or the after it got out and they denied it theory. Either way... it's based on China's economy and their desire to see it keep increasing at this accelerated rate.

If it escaped from a Chinese state laboratory, that's still a huge embarrassment for China on the world stage. The gravity of "losing one's face" in East Asian culture really cant be overstated.
So that's reason enough to try to cover it up and to float the wet-market-explanation instead.

The aggressive tariffs can be explained by all kinds of geopolitical considerations.

Sadly, this virus just reminds us that when we say "a person's life is invaluable", this is really nothing more than some melodramatic nonsense to make us feel good about ourselves.
Then again, we live in a world where many people support using the military (read: allowing soldiers to die) for purposes that have nothing to do with defense and everything to do with money/power. None of this is particularly surprising.
