In the 2020 BLM riots, he was driving for uber when a crowd swarmed his car and surrounded him, preventing escape. One of them, Garrett Foster, a BLM
and boogaloo member, was carrying an AK-47 which he pointed through the window at Perry, at which point Perry opened fire and killed him with a pistol. Despite clear self defense, he was charged with murder. The only additional evidence shown at trial was conversations he had months earlier hypothetically talking about self-defense shooting scenarios, and despite the fact that he clearly did not instigate the mob violence that night and had a good reason to be where he was, he was convicted of murder
The prosecutors had called numerous BLM/antifa witnesses, the same people who had been in the mob threatening him in the first place, who denied that Foster raised the AK-47 first. This is despite the fact that there was cell phone footage literally showing Foster holding a raised AK-47 pointed at Perry, before the shots were fired.
Naturally this jury was also taken from the heavily liberal city, filled with the same folks who had been in the mob that night too
Governor Abbott has already announced he will be pursuing a pardon in this case
