A nutty right-wing electorate is how we got Trump... it is what has enabled him to act as a corrupt, incompetent president.

So the king of the nutjobs lighting our democracy on fire before he rightly leaves office because he lost does matter. Politics is so intertwined with culture now that a fissure like this could have disastrous consequences down the road.

"does it matter" and "is it a threat to democracy" are separate things, tho. Trump lost, via democracy.

Remember when you didn't believe voter fraud?
Then fine it's real, but not large scale?
I'm pretty excited to see next twist in this shitty story lol

lol ur getting worse by the day with this shitty snark whataboutism default posting

2020 broke u like goom, u just stayed. Sad!

Whataboutism? Seriously?

The entire Democratic party, assisted by their allies in the media, spent years trying to delegitimize Trump's election and undermine his presidency with the Russia nothingburger. And let's not forget that this whole Russia investigation only spawned because Obama's people told brazen lies to the FISA courts so that they could spy on Trump's campaign.

Trump's team mused about electors defecting, Hillary's team (which was largely a stand-in for the administration of sitting president Obama) publicly mused about electors defecting. In both cases, nothing ever came from it. Democrats have held up the certification of results for some sort of publicity stunt, Trump just did the same. (Although it was a publicity stunt on behalf of a selfish cause, namely saving face with his base despite losing.)

I think maybe you have a different concept of what a threat to democracy is. It doesn't mean that suddenly a switch is pulled and we're in a police state with King Trump. It means we're altered in such a way that our democracy looks quite different than before.

If Trump had successfully stolen this election, our country would still technically be a democracy. But things would be fundamentally different. And there's less serious indicators that are troublesome.

The fact that the sitting president tried to steal an election, a lot of his voters think it was stolen simply because he said it, and most Republicans gave soft cover for the steal attempt already reveals that our democracy has declined. This isn't normal, we shouldn't pretend everything worked out simply because Biden will become president. Republican politicians and voters aren't going to suddenly snap out of that anti-democratic mindset because Trump isn't living in the White House.

On a more productive note: a relatively recent poll shows that a whooping 79% of Trump voters believe the election was stolen from him:

I wouldnt call that a slim minority of the right wing, this corresponds to around 37% of the electorate.

I think this is a pretty blatant mischaracterization of things. I wouldn't call it a nothingburger but it certainly wasn't treasonous like some people made it out to be.

We can debate and disagree on how the Russia investigation got underway, if there ever was probable cause, about the Steele dossier and so on and forth. However, the end result is unambiguous: the Russia investigation turned out to be based on quite the nothingburger, and it definitely did hamper and undermine Trump's presidency for years.
