As opposed to a 19 y/o with no qualifications whatsoever? You do realize that most nursing homes require nothing more than a high school diploma, right?

At least the national guard troopers receive proper training for whatever tasks they're tasked with.

You must be one of those brilliant types who thinks that the people emptying bedpans in nursing homes are actual nurses. Just LOL.

so they'll carry a bed pan through an obstacle course? or?

No. Masks, gloves, etc. would be standard for the course, with disciplinary actions taken against any guardsmen who fail to observe proper safety for those they're caring for.

Proper procedures would be trained on how to best wash and care for the patients, with enough guardsmen available that if multiple are needed for the sake of both the safety and comfort of (especially heavier) patients.

Many nursing homes skirt the line pretty heavily when it comes to who they hire, and what they actually teach the people they hire. There's a lot of shady as fuck policy, depending on the home, much of which verges on abuse.

"Not all nursing homes" of course. But to say that guardsmen couldn't be trained and used for elderly care while the elderly who have Covid are recovering (or dying) from it isn't particularly enlightened, especially as compared to sending them directly back to the nursing home where they proceed to infect everyone else there, and drive the death rates through the roof.

The level of ignorance in your post is just LOL.

You're trying to indicate that high school graduates who join the national guard are somehow inferior to other high school graduates... How? Why?

And who's talking murder and destruction? That national guard troops are at times deployed to foreign nations is a decision made by the Federal Government. They have no control over that.

"Can't qualify for a better job" is just taking it a step further into the stupid. You think any given guardsperson couldn't work in a nursing home when a huge portion of nursing homes AGAIN only require a high school diploma or GED, often only pays minimum wage, and has no benefits whatsoever? Turns out, the willingness to serve your country, to potentially risk or lose your life in the service of your country is a BETTER job than being a nursing home rat.

Even your attempt to portray the "caregivers" at nursing homes as "working hard to put themselves through college" is wrong. Some do, sure! Others have no intentions where college is concerned whatsoever. Now on the flipside, one of the great benefits of joining the national guard (or any other branch of the military) just happens to be educational assistance. So not only are the troops serving their country in ways that you're "too good for", but in doing so, they're furthering their opportunity to improve their lives as well.

Seems every point you're trying to make shows nothing more than that you hate anyone who is willing to serve their country. :)

A thought occurred to me today
I've been joking about how the national guard could be mobilized to care for seniors and scrub bedpans to address the epidemic

but consider the following statements:
  • The vast majority of deaths are in the elderly and especially those in care homes, infected both by other seniors and by care providers who don't isolate themselves from the rest of the world.
  • Covid-positive elderly are being sent back to care homes from hospitals by executive orders by governors to preserve hospital beds, resulting in more infections at care homes
  • The USACE built tens of thousands of temporary structures for providing medical care to covid patients that went almost completely unused at great expense, and are in the process of being decommissioned
  • Its not feasible to mobilize the national guard to care for seniors at care homes to replace because they can't stay indefinitely during a lengthy crisis

What if instead of sending elderly patients directly home from hospitals to care homes and risking further infections, we mobilized the national guard to utilize the temporary treatment centers and renovate them as transitional centers where patients could remain quarantined for a week or so before being returned to their home care centers? Rather than indefinite caregiving, put reservists on rotating 2-week long quarantine shifts where they'd care for seniors while adhering to their own isolation.

the very idea of a 19 y.o. Chad "have u seen my Dodge charger" Natty Guard taking care of elderly is just a really bad one.

There's no "whoosh" here. There's just a couple of idiots mocking both a fantastic idea and civil servants, while rushing to defend minimum wage workers with no particular qualifications, education, or training that makes them special in any way.

Great job. :)
