i care about semantics, i just dont like semantic arguments where it's based on a judgement call. Like a semantic disagreement about a word is ok, but a semantic argument where its still very subjective just isn't productive. indeed, i was taking "massive" as a vs worst case scenario, which we both agree on is well outside of semantics in this context. this result is a sigh of relief, thusfar.

I personally think sending thousands of troops anywhere is a really bad thing. i just think that the context of combat vs readiness is extremely valid. and plays into the calculation of how much of a loss this is for the USA.

along those lines any time we're talking about a loss in any scenario we have to count ourselves extremely lucky when Trump plays fast and loose, assassinates a foreign govt official, talks shit on twitter, and we're not at war. that's the reason i was looking at this in the context of worst case in the first place, because with Trump you always weigh consequences against the worst case. he has a unique ability as POTUS compared to his recent peers to walk us directly into some serious bullshit. his lack of composure, his fast and loose social media presence, and his general lack of experience are a dangerous cocktail in these events. we're in a place right now where we're counting on Iran's restraint because we all recognize Trump has zero chill. its a fucking terrifying thought.

the only other point i'd say is that to the audience you're asking a question to "Iran resuming their nuclear program" isn't going to fly, because they believe Iran never halted that program.

guess that's inevitable when people base their 'opinion' on propaganda. i rather stick to the facts. the IAEA is a reliable source for things like that, they made the inspections and confirmed iran was adhering to the terms of the deal. they have no reason to lie, they are not a national agency.

It's almost surreal seeing Republican senators express anger towards the Trump administration.

I agree that it's not worth my time to engage too deeply in conspiracy theories. You just started out your question asking what the other side thought, so i thought it was relevant to your question.

The other side thinks that Iran was always making nukes, that they're an evil regime that war may be justified against even though they dont personally want war from a cost standpoint (in lives and money), and likely that Islam plays a larger role in this conflict that what you or I would think.

I try not to ask too many questions of cultists, because the amount of gaps we have in accepted facts is too large. Like Ghot, i nitpick basic facts he got wrong that a demonstrable, then just shitpost on him. i like to get him to double down, then post a basic source proving he's wrong, just so he has to blindly doubt the source and look even more stupid. that's how i choose to engage with his ilk, rather than earnest debate.

Still no confirmation on Ukraine flight 752 and a whole lot of conflicting narratives in the media
but farsi/arabic twitter is aflood with a bunch of unverified / unconfirmed images that may or may not be from this event

this is clearly a surveillance video of this plane crash, same pattern of fires on the ground and matches the area from videos/pictures by first responders;

and this is purportedly an image showing the remains of a 9K331 surface-to-air missile head found near the wreckage, consistent with soviet-developed iranian-deployed SAMs near Tehran;

to be fair, depending on how you define the word, 'evil' regime is a term that i don't have a problem with when it comes to iran. an authoritarian theocracy is not a place i personally would like to live in, and their stance on israel is of course unacceptable. of course there is a whole lot of context, nuance, and history related to that, which certainly elevates the whole issue above a simplistic good vs. evil dichotomy, but in terms of labels, 'evil regime' is a reasonably accurate one.
i just thought i put those questions out there, so that even if no one outright admits they were being stupid just accepting the "didn't cost us anything, was a smart move and a win" talking point, some of the less indoctrinated conservatives might at least think about it, and maybe consider those factors. maybe not likely but still worth a shot imo...
