The president had every Democrat senator voting to remove him on 2 counts, and a brave Republican, the presidential Republican nominee 4 years before him, voted to remove on 1 count.

That's not victory. It's a historical rebuke.

History usually goes against the insane idiots so I'll argue that you should take it more seriously.

History is written by the victors. If Trump ultimately succeeds with his mission, history will look at him through rose-colored glasses. If he doesnt, then the historical judgement of him will be as harsh as you hope.

Just to make this clear: Trump's political mission is to spark a lasting paradigm shift - transform the GOP away from the party of the Koch brothers and Ayn Rand and into a party for the "working middle" of the country; transform the country's ideological center away from technocratic and globalist neoliberalism toward an "America first" populism. Simply winning reelection in 2020 does not guarantee that he succeeds with this mission.

I think you're reading into Trump way too much. I don't think he is a deep enough person to have a "political mission" the way you are describing it.

Of course not. He's not a cerebral person. He doesnt have a secret checklist or mission statement in his drawer. But on an instinctive level, that's where he's at imho. Unlike most other billionaires, Trump has a gut feeling about what's going in the world that is aligned with the gut feeling of ordinary conservatives.

If you look at what he's had to say about politics and the direction the world is headed, he's been surprisingly consistent throughout his life. Even back in the 80s, he was complaining about China ripping the U.S. off, even back then, he was calling for some sort of "America first populism". Just like Bernie, he's held a worldview whose broad contours remained steady throughout the decades, and which for some reason only became relevant in the 2010s.
