Steve Bannon promoted the story on Breitbart, which is a hard right tabloid, and eventually the Russian bot farms used billions of spam messages to "promote" the story all over the internet.

Other media outlets promoted the story as well, but as time went on, most of the critical details in the book regarding the story turned out to be inaccurate.
