What are the prevailing opinions within the Republican Party / conservatives about this? Genuinely curious.
My thoughts on a Trump 2024 candidacy?
I liked what he did from 2015 through 2019, he is still a relatively good fit for me policy-wise and I will forever be grateful for having prevented a Hillary or JEB! presidency, and for the realignment he brought upon the GOP, away from GWB or Romney types toward populist nationalism.
Nonetheless, his successes came at the expense of horrible optics and buttloads of scandals. In the end, he was far less efficient than I had hoped at the start of his presidency. More importantly, he completely lost the plot along the way and became increasingly erratic toward the end of his presidency, culminating in his selfish and highly corrosive lies about the stolen election. Since losing reelection in November 2020, he has gone off the deep end, first throwing away two Senate seats in Georgia, then inciting his supporters to storm the Capitol, then endorsing a ton of horrible candidates which cost the GOP multiple crucial seats in the 2022 midterms.
By now, it has become clear that Trump, first, stands no chance of winning the general in 2024 and, second, has outlived his usefulness and become a lliability for his party. It is time to move on, and unlike in 2016, there exist better option in the same ideological lane.
