Yep, that's the hard part.\

Accountability to say the DOJ... sure.
Accountability to the "people"... sorta defeats the purpose of police in the 1st place.

That would be like the babysitter being accountable to the baby, without having to go through the parents.

The government is not like your parents.
They do not have your best interests in mind.
This must be understood if we are to have any chance at fixing anything.

That's why we "elect" parts of the government.

The bold is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen written on this site. If there's no accountability to the people, then why do they even purport to "Protect and Serve" at all? Even if you discount the SCOTUS decisions that have held that police are not obligated to protect anyone that isn't already in their custody, police departments around the country have used the term "To protect and serve" for DECADES. You see it on police vehicles all over (the county sheriff's vehicles that go past my house have it on them). If there's no accountability, then there's no service at all, and that implies that police should be able to act with complete impunity, which is an absolutely fucking stupid concept.

The idea that the police were ever a popular group of people is a fallacy.

most cops and cop families have 1 choice in life, hang out with other cops or cop families or live life alone.

15 years ago well before BLM made cops the "enemies" i did ride alongs with cops, events with cops, etc. all of them told me "prepare to lose all your friends, ALL of them".

BLM maybe made it worse, in some parts for good reason, but cops have always done a thankless job, have always been distrusted by everyone, and have always had to hang with only cops for life.

You can criticize him, but you mustn't insult him.

And the D__durr guy or however you spell his name, did the latter.

Sorry, but this is nonsense. I don't care if people insult me. The only point to be made is that D_urRRR stated, "Everybody in the world should be professional and care for others. That's what I expect from people. It's because people don't choose that life is why the world is so screwed up." and promptly followed it with an insult. He couldn't even follow his own standards for a single post. Being insulted and being insulting is par for the course in political debate. Long as it's relatively good natured, who cares? Nobody's said anything bad here, relax. :)

I quoted you to agree with you, then finished reading what you wrote, now I gotta waffle a bit. First, it is kind of dumb. The head guy when it comes to police is the Sheriff. The Sheriff is an elected position. If that's all there was to it, we'd be good. The problem is that the Sheriff can't get funding without the mayor/governor. In the case of the school shooting, there was the further complication that the School District had managed to wrestle authority away from the Sheriff and into their own hands, then belayed active shooter protocol. Quite literally, the school district, who are not elected for ANYTHING regarding law enforcement, called the shots. That being said, I still mostly agree with the first sentence. And then...

If a serial killer puts a sign on their business offering $10 massages, and thousands of people enter the business and never leave, are you going to defend them? Claim they couldn't possibly be a serial killer, merely a super successful masseuse? This is effectively what you're doing with police. Words and slogans don't mean shit. And you should really use some introspection regarding this post the next time somebody says this was founded as a christian nation, I mean after all the "In God We Trust" on our very currency, and you start to say, "It's just words, words lie, here's the truth..."

The bottom line is that the courts have ruled the police have neither obligation nor duty to protect the people, only the interests of the state. Done.

The police are also, supposed to maintain order.
The police were invented so the weak and helpless, don't get their lunch money taken each and every day.

Maybe the IRS would be a better example.
Everyone, to some degree, cheats on their taxes... as much as they can.
If the IRS was accountable to the "people", the entire system would fall apart.

It's like putting money in Free Parking, in Monopoly. With say four good monopoly players... that will... break the bank.
That's why money in Free Parking is NOT in the rules. Because as the game is built... it doesn't work. It kills the game.

Right now we're going through "growing pains" as a country.
We should be learning to take MSM with a grain of salt, to take advertising with a grain of salt.
We should be learning why real education is important, and not this BS that goes on in schools these days.

Its. why, for example the best people should get the jobs, or into higher level schooling. It shouldn't be based on what color, or sex, or creed the applicants are.

People need to learn to.... think. But they also need to learn about the things they're doing the thinking about.

When you cut away all the BS... the DOJ is the oversight for the police... NOT "the people".
The only thing the "people" have the right to oversee is themselves, and to make sure... our govt. gets three "able" parts (executive, legislative and judicial).
That's the people's JOB.

If they don't do their JOB... those three sides of our govt. will take it on themselves to decide who their members are.
Then that defeats the purpose of the three branches of govt.

The way our system was designed, the people need to vote and they need to vote well.
Sometimes they NEED to elect the Trumps over the Bidens, because of the choices we were offered... Trump WAS the better man.

All Biden is... is a puppet of the Congress... oops, there's one branch of the system of checks and balances... gone.
Now... Congress or some in Congress are trying to influence/control the judicial branch.

At this point in time... the Congress branch is using MSM to brainwash the voters.

Time to wake up people. If you don't... you're gonna end up with a dictatorship.

tl;dr version

The police can't be answerable to the "people". They need to only be answerable to the DOJ.
The police are "supposed" to "police" the people. That's their job.
If you don't like how they're doing it... then vote... better.

Haha, I see. That's one way of looking at it. I guess in this regard we are different people (and this is what makes life interesting). I personally try not to insult my opponent in a debate. I will only insult them in retaliation if they insult me first.
