There are multiple agencies/groups that are handling the data. You can easily research them. Do you see any major discrepancies? If the numbers were off by more than 10%, that's when you can start questioning things like sources, methodology, etc. However, it's probably not best to do that and instead just increase the range of COVID deaths. We do the same thing in war where we say 100,000-600,000 civilians died. Often times, the number by itself isn't particularly relevant and it's the order of magnitude that drives the policy.
