Unfortunately, we have to actually live in the same world as Russia and China. We don't get the luxury of closing our borders like Japan under Sakoku. We are playing a zero sum game with China, not Russia, and when we cede our sphere of influence and kick it to their waiting arms, we're orchestrating our own doom. We had decades of third way neoliberals who collaborated with China to slowly creep their influence at our expense, like a controlled fall. Then we had Trump barge in with Navarronomics saying that we can fight China on their own terms. And all the neoliberals mislabeled and accused him of wanting to just close us off and let China win on an empty board by ceding all our global stewardship. Well here we are now, with the most distilled neoliberal purist president yet, moreso than even Obama, and what do we do? Throw away the mantle of global stewardship and hand over the reins to China uncontested. All those decades of pragmatists saying how we must compromise our highminded ideals to work with less scrupulous regimes, and especially to keep the oil flowing at all costs lest the prices blow up on the middle class. This is why I say we're in a scenario that can only be explained by western incompetence and schizophrenia, not rational self-interest.

You don't win an economic war with China by ending the petrodollar and forcing global markets to embrace the relative safety and stability of the RMB. You don't win by throwing up an Iron Curtain that puts the US and EU on one side, and Russia, China, KSA, UAE, India, Mexico, Israel, Japan, etc on the other side.

the only way to "win" cleanly is to absorb a massive price inflation by redirecting production stateside, OR by automating the processes to the point where price can be maintained or at least offset by shipping costs from China, and then you're keeping consumers happy without the domestic jobs to back them.

this is the 3rd stage of automation but we're just not ready. look at how people who work react to stimulus checks, to jobs not offering enriching days for their workers, etc. We're just lucky china can pay workers dog crap wages to avoid automating most of the work themselves, if they could we'd likely see a renewed 1 child policy type reality set up in the country.

Biden has taken the plunge and announced a total ban on Russian oil and gas imports to the US, guaranteeing a spike in gas prices.
Putin has responded almost immediately with a very vague order "banning certain imports and exports" without any clarification of what that means.
McDonalds has closed down all stores in Russia.

oil is at $120 bbl and on its way to $150 in a week

https://montreal.ctvnews.ca/montreal-symphony-orchestra-drops-russian-piano-prodigy-from-concerts-amid-backlash-1.5811068

Montreal Symphony Orchestra banned Russia prodigy pianist 20 year old Alexander Malofeev, cancelling several concerts he was scheduled to play while on his current tour.
Malofeev is a Russian national who has been outspoken about his opposition to Russia's war in Ukraine and has no personal ties to Putin or any other such factor like Gergiev and Rebnetko
Even though he agreed with their political position and did nothing to earn their ire, he was targeted specifically because he's an ethnic Russian.
"Simon Brault, director of the Canada Council for the Arts, said public funds will no longer be provided for any activities involving the participation of Russian or Belarusian artists or arts organizations."
Leila Getz, the founder and artistic director of a recital series in Vancouver, put out statement saying "she could not in good conscience present a concert by any Russian artist at this moment in time", even if they spoke out against the war like Malofeev has
When questioned about it in an interview, Getz changed her premise and said that she was afraid of the potential of protests and that cancelling all Russians was necessary to protect them from a dangerous Canadian public that might harass them.
The executive director Edgar Herrera put out a statement saying "that the symphony was concerned that hosting a Russian artist could hurt its image and alienate donors."

Man, isn't it just easier to call people a racial slur and spit on them? Why tie yourself up in knots with excuses?

https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/us-ban-russian-energy-imports-doesnt-include-uranium-source-2022-03-08/

as a followup to previous posts in the other thread about Uranium: Biden's ban on Russian energy imports has a specific exception carved out for Uranium now lmao
We don't import much oil or gas, but our attempts to sanction and ban them can affect world prices which does come back to bite us, while that leverage still exists over the EU and India. We do, however, import half our uranium for nuclear power plants from Russia (+Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan, their vassals) and have zero domestic production right now. And all the posturing and bluster Biden can muster still leaves the ball in Putin's court because he has the power to cut off Russian oil, gas, wheat, uranium, etc exports to the US and EU, to the countries actually relying on them. If Russia cuts off uranium exports, nuclear power plants will be on a timer before they go dark, domestic production can't resume in time and we're not going to get enough from the UK and Germany to offset it, especially not when we're provoking Russia to cut off their gas.

So on top of an oil crisis as costs doubled YTY and is passing $120 bbl, we're also relying on Russia not to hit back at the 20% of electricity we make from nuclear
