US and Canadian infrastructure is also bad, unfortunately. Oil has been cheap and plentiful. Rail networks lag behind other nations putting more reliance on semi's. Public transit is abysmal and non-existent compared to other countries.

We are also urban sprawling due to our landmass rather than building upward.
